Description

Medical literature documents the increased use of opioid pain medication. Data show that patients who receive higher doses of prescribed pain medications, such as opioids, are at increased risk for addiction and/or overdose. The presenter discusses classifications of opioids and how to safely prescribe them for injured workers. The presenter also discusses the use of opioid patient-prescriber agreements.

Learning Objectives: 1. Explain how to properly classify opioids; 2. Define safe approaches toward prescribing opioids for patients; and 3. Recognize patients who violate the prescribed agreement (signed relative opioid usage).
