  (136) Stop the Mess: Pumps and Environmental Health and Safety
Track: Chemical
Track 2: Safety Management
Speaker(s): Mary Lynch , Nancy Westcott
Wednesday, March 9, 2016 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Session Type: Educational Session
Skill Level: Intermediate
Description

Employees risk injury if they lack either training or appropriate chemical transfer equipment. The presenters describe system pumps and point of use (transfer) pumps, and what goes into choosing the best pump and associated equipment. You learn the value of informed equipment selection versus the hazards and problems associated with using the wrong equipment. The presenters also discuss sealed pumping systems. The correct pump for the job is an engineering control that can reduce worker exposure to hazardous materials and minimize repetitive motion injuries.

Learning Objectives: 1. Distinguish between the various liquid chemical transfer methods in a facility including system pumps and point of use (transfer) pumps; 2. Recognize the value of specifying the correct equipment and equipment components for use with a particular chemical to prevent leaks; and 3. Explain how equipment selection can strengthen an environmental health and safety program.
