Date: Wednesday, March 9, 2016 Time: 8:15 AM - 9:15 AM Speakers: Rebecca Guerin, Program Coordinator, Safe-Skilled-Ready Workforce Initiative, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Track: Training and Education Session Type: Educational Session Skill Level: Basic Description: More than 80 percent of teens will work while in high school. Most are unprepared for the hazards they face. Young people under age 25 are twice as likely as adults to get hurt on the job. Efforts to prepare the emerging labor force often miss skills for safe and healthy work. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), through its free, online curriculum, Talking Safety, addresses this critical gap. The presenter introduces the curriculum and the foundational work safetyskills and knowledge it teaches. Learning Objectives: 1. Explain the burden of young worker injuries; 2. Discuss foundational, workplace safety and health competencies; 3. Identify resources, such as the NIOSH Talking Safety curriculum, for preparing young workers for safe and healthy work; and 4. List ways to prepare young people for a lifetime of safe and healthy work.
