Date: Thursday, March 10, 2016 Time: 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM Speakers: Bryan Haywood, Founder & CEO, Safety Engineering Network Track: Government/Regulatory Secondary Track: Emergency Preparedness and Response Session Type: Educational Session Description: The session covers the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) minimums for complying with 1910.146(k) and makes clear that non-entry rescue is the rule, with two exceptions. The presenter discusses the pros and cons of using a local fire department for rescue and why this method is not as easy as dialing 911. He also covers how reclassification to a non-permit required space eliminates the requirements of 1910.146(k). In addition, he explains the proper way to reclassify permit-required confined spaces to non-permit status, which spaces you can re-classify, and which ones you enter using alternative means. Learning Objectives: 1. Recall the OSHA requirements in 1910.146(k); 2. Explain that non-entry rescue is the rule for all entries into permit-required confined spaces with two exceptions; 3. Identify the characteristics of permit-required confined spaces that can be reclassified under 1910.146©(7); and 4. Describe how to re-classify a permit-required confined space properly so that 1910.146(k) no longer applies.
