Description:
Whether we are at work or at home, all it takes is a split second. Whether we are doing something we have done a thousand times or for the first time, all it takes is a split second. In that split second, everything changes – we are changed, our family and friends are forever changed. Such perceived behavior can cause what is commonly called “unintended blindness,” and/or an insensitivity to the hazards of the job. They call it “Normalization of Deviance.” The speaker shares a personal and catastrophic event with attendees so they can see and make those connections personally and professionally in what they and their colleagues do every day. This presentation may contain graphic materials.

Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize that a catastrophic injury just doesn’t affect you - you are obligated to be safe.
2. Listen from the survivor’s point of view, because usually there are not survivors.
3. Identity what to do when you become indifferent to inherent dangers.
4. Define how you can apply the presenter’s life lesson to what you do.
