Exoskeleton Limitations for Injury Prevention [93.34] | ||||||||||||
Date: Friday, March 13, 2020 Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Location: Greater Columbus Convention Center Speakers: Terry Butler, President, Lean Steps Consulting Inc. Jason Gillette, Associate Professor, Iowa State University Track: Ergonomics and Overexertion Secondary Track: Manufacturing Session Type: Workshop Skill Level: Intermediate Description: In 2019 Toyota made exoskeletons mandatory for anyone exposed to Upper Limb Localized Fatigue at or above the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists threshold limit value. This workshop explores the methodology used to define protection factors for various upper body exoskeletons used as personal protective equipment for injury prevention. Ear plugs, and respirators have protection factors, safety shoes, gloves, and safety glasses must meet specific standards and so should exoskeletons if they are used to help protect workers from injury. Learning Objectives: 1. Summarize a basic understanding of the physical benefit of augmenting the human body while working. 2. Define the impact of Upper Limb Localized Fatigue with and without an exoskeleton. 3. Describe the impact of working with various weights, in various postures, with and without exoskeletons. 4. Identify what an electromyography assessment of a shoulder support exoskeleton is during on-site job tasks. 5. Explain how Fatigue Risk Value (%MVC) and Average EMG Amplitude (%MVC) may be used to define exoskeleton limitations (protection factors).
