New studies show that sitting time is associated with a higher risk of all causes of mortality including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. The presenter discusses the similarities of the risk of smoking verses those of sitting. Any extended sitting- sitting behind a desk, behind a wheel, or in front of a screen can be harmful to our health. Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the similarities and differences of health risks associated with sitting and smoking. 2. Explain the negative health effects of prolonged sitting as demonstrated in several peer reviewed scientific and medical journals. 3. List the ways to overcome the negative effects of prolonged sitting.
