Arc Flash Analysis Using 2018 IEEE 1584 [45.25]
Date: Thursday, March 12, 2020
Time: 2:45 PM - 3:45 PM

Speakers:
Julie VanDyne, Principal Engineer, IDC Engineering Inc.

Track: Engineering
Session Type: Educational Session
Skill Level: Advanced

Description:
This presentation delves into the 2018 edition of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Guide for Performing Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations (IEEE 1584). Following its initial publication in 2002, the standard has become widely used in the commercial and industrial environment. After years of study and laboratory testing, the new standard was released in late 2018. The focus of this session is a discussion of the new calculation protocol, how it works, the various formulas, methods, and considerations. Time constraints and the complexity of the formulas prevent presentation of actual calculations but the presenter covers how the various formulas work and work together.

Learning Objectives:
1. Help the attendee become familiar with the new IEEE 1584 Calculation protocol.
2. Gain an understanding why the new protocol was necessary.
3. Understand the structure of the new IEEE 1584 calculation matrix.
4. Become aware of the expanded requirements for data collection under the new IEEE 1584.
