Opioid analgesics have become a staple in pain control. Although they may provide adequate pain relief, they come with debilitating side effects such as constipation, nausea, vomiting, hyperalgesia and hypogonadism. The presenter explains how these side effects can lead to a longer hospital stay, increased claim costs and delay in returning to work. You also learn ways to alleviate the side effects with adjuvant therapies or by modifying, tapering or discontinuing the use of opioids.

Learning Objectives:
Identify the common side effects of opioid analgesics and how to mitigate their impact
Explain the impact of polypharmacy to the injured worker
Recognize the danger of benzodiazepine combinations
