Speaker: Howard Eberts, CSP, Area Director, Occupational Safety and Health Administration
Eberts started with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as a compliance officer in the Columbus area office. He conducted a wide variety of safety and health enforcement inspections, including worker fatality investigations. Eberts’ areas of expertise include health hazard exposure and chemical process safety management. He served as National Council of Field Labor Locals Local 2089 union steward in the Columbus Area Office from 1991-1999 and regional union representative from 1999-2001. Eberts worked in the Chicago Regional Office from 2001-2006 as assistant regional administrator for Cooperative and State Programs. His responsibilities as assistant regional administrator included overseeing Region V’s voluntary protection program (VPP), state and consultation programs, training, grant programs, emergency preparedness and response program, and compliance assistance activities, including partnerships and alliances. Eberts returned to the Columbus Area Office in 2006 and served as the compliance assistance specialist for the office until 2010. His responsibilities included conducting outreach and compliance assistance, as well as coordinating and assisting the office in OSHA’s cooperative programs, including VPP, partnerships, alliances, and emergency preparedness activities. He served as regional union representative and the union co-chair of OSHA’s Regional Safety and Health Committee. Eberts moved to the Cleveland Area Office as the area director in January 2011. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame.
