Speaker: Scott Dotson, CIH, Ph.D., Managing Health Scientist, Cardno ChemRisk
Dotson is a managing health scientist with Cardno ChemRisk with more than 15 years of experience in toxicology, industrial hygiene, risk assessment, and occupational health. Prior to joining Cardno ChemRisk, he was employed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as a health scientist for more than 10 years. He has experience in characterizing exposures and risk associated with workplace and consumer exposures to a wide range of chemicals such as fibers and particulate matter (e.g., asbestos, silica, and coal dust), organic and inorganic compounds, biocides (e.g., peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide), and metals. He has led efforts to integrate novel risk assessment methods into occupational risk analysis. Dotson has established occupational exposure limits (OELs) and authoritative exposure recommendations for selected chemicals. While at NIOSH, his research efforts and responsibilities focused on critically evaluating occupational hazards and developing appropriate guidelines used to establish NIOSH policies, scientific-decision making strategies, and recommendations. As part of these efforts, he conducted assessments aimed at characterizing the hazard and risk associated with dermal contact to chemicals and developed workplace recommendations to protect workers from acute inhalation exposures. Dotson also led NIOSH projects focused on investigating the health risks of workplace exposures to 1-bromopropane and peracetic acid. His doctoral research focused on quantifying workplace exposures and health risks associated with the servicing of asbestos-containing automotive parts and materials. He is active in many professional organizations, such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association, Society for Risk Analysis, and Society of Toxicology.
