Jack Smith is the Associate Director for Emergency Management and Response Operations at the National Center for Medical Readiness at Wright State University. He is responsible for the development of all training, education, and consulting programs related to Emergency/Disaster Management, First Responders, and healthcare institutions. Jack joined the National Center for Medical Readiness in 2006 where he managed the design and construction of the State of Ohio’s disaster field hospital; the 1,800 bed Modular Emergency Medical System. As an Associate Director at the Center, Jack also serves as Executive Director for the Ohio Mortuary Operations Response Team – the state’s only mass fatality disaster response team. He is also an adjunct professor in the undergraduate Emergency Management program and is a contributing author to several textbooks in the areas of disaster healthcare supply chain, patient surge, and mass fatality management. During his 30-year career in the fire service Jack served as a company officer, department training officer, and shift commander. While serving on the regional Urban Search & Rescue strike team and FEMA’s Ohio Task Force 1, Jack taught technical and heavy rescue disciplines including trench and structural collapse, swift water and ice rescue, elevator, machinery, and auto extrication at Cincinnati State Technical College and deployed to several state and federal disasters, including Hurricane Katrina. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Cedarville University in Ohio and a master’s degree in Emergency/Disaster Management from American Public University.
