Watkins has worked at General Electric (GE) Engine Services in Cincinnati for 25 years as the environmental health and safety (EHS) leader for their Symmes Road facility. She also serves as their radiation safety officer, laser safety officer, and leads their first aid program. Watkins is a graduate of the environmental sciences program at Wright State University in Dayton. She attends the annual Industrial Hygiene Association Conference as an instructor and participates in continuing education courses to keep up on the latest EHS topics. She has been a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association - Ohio Valley Section for many years and currently serves as a director. She has served many times as a mentor to young industrial hygienists studying for their certified industrial hygienist exams. She often hosts EHS co-ops at her work site and helps them to fully experience the life of an EHS professional in a large industrial setting. Watkins is also an advanced emergency medical technician, firefighter, hazmat member of her local fire department for more than 22 years. She serves as a state proctor for emergency medical technician (EMT) exams and mentors new EMTs as they begin their experience of working in the ambulance/emergency environment.
