Speaker: Miriam Calkins, Research Industrial Hygienist, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
Calkins is an industrial hygienist with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a co-director for the exposure assessment core team in the Fire Fighter Cancer Cohort Study. She completed her doctorate in occupational and environmental hygiene, as well as her master’s in exposure science and graduate certificate in climate science, at the University of Washington in Seattle. She has worked with workers' compensation data in both Washington state and Ohio and has conducted epidemiologic, experimental, and exposure assessment heat-health research in agricultural and construction sectors. In addition to heat-related research, Calkin's work focuses on occupational exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and comprehensive exposure assessments for firefighters during fire response, training, and investigations. Additional research interests include optimization of monitoring strategies for application to research and practice.
